A quick tour and last weekend's adventures

I mentioned a last week that Jess and I had wandered the school grounds taking some pictures to give you an idea of what the kids' school was like, while we were waiting for drama practice to let out. Here is a graffitti art mural done by some of the students...It's in the courtyard near the soccer court.

An original art sculpture by more students that welcomes you to the elementary school building.

The playground

More art...

The student garden. Jess calls this the "winter garden" There are some onions, lavender and other plants that have continued to grow in the colder weather.

The middleschool...and maybe the highschool science rooms are in this building. At the bottom to the left is one of the entrances to the cafeteria.

The main entrance

Inside the main entrance is a very grand staircase.

Jess likes this wall with the picture of Benjamin Franklin

This is the soccer court between the main building, middleschool building and the elementary building

Here is the middleschool building.

This is a picture of the highschool that sits across the street from the elementary/middleschool buildings.

A closer look at the highschool courtyard with it's basketball hoops.

The pink bench that serves as a memorial to a student who tragically died before school started this year.

In more recent news...Alexa was invited to a friend's birthday party last Saturday at a bowling alley in Pedrables. At least I think it's in Pedrables because the name of the bowling alley is bowing pedrables. It is near the soccer stadium, Camp Nou and there isn't an easy way to access it from public transportation but we tried it anyway. We took the train and walked a bit to Avenue Diagonal and took the 7 bus. I was hoping the bus driver could speak enough English to confirm the bus stop I wanted to take but he didn't. Still, we managed to get off where I thought we should...and walked a few more blocks to the bowling alley. It was surprisingly exactly like bowling alleys in the US, minus the french fries, which is rather important to my gang but we survived. Joe swears the gutters were bigger than what we were used to. Andrea, Joseph, Jessica and I had a great time while Alexa was with her friends. I even scored a 123. I was pretty impressed with myself.lol Jess did well too for her first time without bumpers. I put my foot down. 10 is old enough to play without them. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, she recovered with a respectable 47 in her second game.

After we played two games we decided to have a bite to eat and watch Alexa and her friend's play. The menu boasted Pepperoni pizza. The kids had high expectations...note to self...don't order the pepperoni pizza from the bowling alley.lol We were still in Spain. So, we made up for it with helado...gelato...icecream. Here is Alexa and her friend Jacob, whose family is from Gettysburg PA. His parents are writer/teachers on sabatical from Gettysburg College? Something like that. His Mom was in my Spanish class but she dropped out this semester so she has time to write.

The birthday girl, Mariana is in the striped shirt.

Sunday was a beautiful day so we decided to take advantage of it and head down to the port area near the Aquarium. The mall is open even on Sundays there and it's just pretty to walk around.

We did a little boat shopping while we were there and picked out a few we thought we could live on...

In the end we had to admit we'd most likely end up on a little dingy of a boat but it was a fun fantasy while it lasted. We had a few hours to kill before the restaurants started serving dinner. You have to remember that dinner here starts at 8 pm at the earliest. Andrea and Joe wanted to take in a 3D movie but Alexa and Jess were more interested in seeing the Aquarium again. So we split up and agreed to meet in a couple hours back outside.

We'd been to the Aquarium when we first came in July and I wasn't that impressed. We've been to the aquariums in Baltimore and Tampa...and Boston.lol We love aquariums. The exhibits are on the smaller side and when we went in July it was crowded so it was hard to appreciate them. This time when we went through there was hardly anyone there and you could take your time and enjoy it. We went through the tube thing twice. Well, the first time it took souvenier picture of us we weren't facing the camera so we wanted to get our good side on film.lol

There is an underwater robot suit the kids can climb into. I had no idea why this picture turned sideways. I can't get it to be normal...

Alexa took a turn in the underwater robot suit...her robot of course is shopping.

While they played in the kid area I spied the moon over Barceloneta. The picture doesn't show how gorgeous it was at all...big round and clear. We went out to take a few more pictures later...they didn't do it justice either.

Our second turn through the tunnel and we spotted this octopus in one of the tanks...

Then on our way outside to take a better picture of the moon...this was the sunset
More Moon pictures

The girls decided to get into the picture

Hamming it up because that's what we do best...

We couldn't find the others so we decided to ride the carousel to pass the time.

Luckily Joe and Andrea caught up with us before the ride started...

This week was more of the same. I brought my camera to the pottery class unfortunately someone had taken the memory card out of it. So, still no pictures of my masterpieces. This week I worked on a tea pot by using a technique called slamming. It's fun. You throw the clay against the table and then smack it...good for working out frustrations. *grin* But, my top half was much dryer than the bottom half by the time I finished so...I don't think it'll survive the entire process.
This weekend we're going to the Canary Islands for a few days. The kids have off for Semana Blanco. This means, white week. Traditionally, everyone goes skiing. We're heading to warmer weather. It'll be in the low 70s. The island is known for it's volcanic landscapes so we're excited to see somethings we haven't seen before. And it's all part of Spain so there isn't a new language to learn. Woohoo!!
